Government Planning Introduction Of Private Landlord Registration Scheme

Under Government plans aimed at cracking down on unscrupulous landlords, anyone letting a residential property will have to register with a national body.

Landlords, developers and buy to let investors will be required to pay a £50 registration fee. Landlords who do not keep their property in good condition could be struck off and have their licence revoked.

The reforms will be outlined in a Green Paper expected to be issued later this month.

Any government action would follow an independent review into the private rented sector.

Private landlords in Scotland are already required to register. However, last week, the charity Shelter Scotland said that rogue landlords were continuing to operate there three years after the scheme was introduced.
